Without Norton, are we protected from malware?

Since the loss of complimentary Norton Antivirus, we have not purchased antivirus software for our home laptops and iPads. today we got a popup fake Microsoft scam that our laptop was locked and to call a phone # to recover.  It was a scam, but does it mean there is malware on our laptop and what steps need to be taken?

What are other CCOR members doing to protect from attack?

I have an Apple iMac and use MalwareBytes, which is free.   MalwareBytes is for all devices, apple & PC.
